What is Dan Nguyen’s training and experience?
Hi, I’m Dan Nguyen.
I’m a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, lens replacement surgery, and glaucoma treatment. I help patients across Cheshire, Chester and Wrexham restore and protect their vision with personalised treatment tailored to their lifestyle and visual goals.
After graduating from the University of Bristol Medical School, I trained at some of the UK’s leading eye centres, including St Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and Bristol Eye Hospital. I then completed two advanced subspecialty fellowships, one at Bristol Eye Hospital and another at the internationally renowned Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. These fellowships provided me with specialist expertise in complex cataract surgery and the medical and surgical management of glaucoma.
Today, I am the Lead Clinician for Glaucoma at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and hold qualifications including MBChB, MBA, FRCOphth and FRANZCO. I am a Fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
What procedures do I perform?
I provide a wide range of advanced eye treatments, including:
- Cataract surgery
- Premium cataract surgery with toric, enhanced depth of focus and multifocal lens implants
- Refractive lens exchange (lens replacement surgery)
- Medical and surgical glaucoma management
- Laser treatment for glaucoma
- Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
- Trabeculectomy and non-penetrating glaucoma surgery
- Glaucoma implant surgery for complex glaucoma
- High-risk cataract surgery for patients with co-existing eye conditions
I have a particular interest in customised cataract surgery and helping patients reduce their dependence on glasses.
Research, teaching and professional achievements
Alongside my clinical practice, I actively contribute to advancing ophthalmology. I regularly publish research in peer-reviewed medical journals and have presented my work at national and international ophthalmology meetings.
My research interests include:
- Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
- Neuroprotection and preserving the optic nerve
- Advanced lens technologies and visual outcomes
I am a Principal Investigator for clinical research studies, review articles for leading ophthalmic journals, and teach and mentor the next generation of eye surgeons. I also hold an honorary research position with the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) at the University of Melbourne.
