Are you nervous about eye surgery?

You are not alone, many people feel nervous before eye surgery.

Some people worry it will hurt.

Some worry they will see what is happening.

Some worry they will move at the wrong time.

Some worry they are too old, too anxious, or too frightened.

If this sounds like you, please know this is common. At Dan Nguyen Eye Clinic, we help patients feel calm, safe, and ready before treatment goes ahead.

You do not need to “be brave” on your own. We will talk you through each step, answer your questions, take your fear seriously and we will move at a pace that feels right for you.

It is normal to feel scared before eye surgery

Your eyes are precious.

So it makes sense to feel protective of them.

Many patients tell us they felt anxious before cataract surgery or lens replacement. Some have put treatment off for months or years because the thought of eye surgery felt too much.

We understand this.

The aim is not to rush you. The aim is to help you feel informed, calm, and in control.

Will eye surgery hurt?

This is often the biggest worry.

Most people do not feel pain during cataract surgery or lens replacement.

Before treatment starts, we use anaesthetic eye drops. These drops numb the eye. This helps stop pain during the procedure.

You may feel:

  • Light pressure
  • A cool water feeling
  • Gentle movement
  • Bright lights
  • Mild touch

You should not feel sharp pain.

If you feel discomfort, you can tell us. The team is there to help you feel safe.

What does lens replacement feel like?

Lens replacement is similar to cataract surgery.

The natural lens inside your eye is removed and replaced with a clear lens implant.

This can sound worrying. But the eye is numbed first.

Most patients do not describe the procedure as painful. They may notice pressure, light, water, or gentle movement.

We explain what to expect before the day, so there are no surprises.

What happens during cataract surgery?

Fear often gets worse when you do not know what will happen.

That is why we explain the process in plain English.

Cataract surgery is the only way to remove a cataract.

During the procedure, the cloudy lens is removed. A clear lens implant is then placed inside the eye.

The treatment is usually quick. You are not expected to understand every medical step. You only need to know what you may feel, what the team will ask you to do, and how we help you stay comfortable.

Am I too old for eye surgery?

Some older patients worry that they are “too old” for treatment.

Age alone does not decide this.

What matters is your eye health, your general health, and how your vision is affecting your life.

Some patients need more time. Some need things explained slowly. Some want a family member involved.

That is fine.

We move at a pace that works for you.

What if I am very anxious?

Please tell us.

You will not be judged.

Some patients feel calm after one conversation. Others need more time.

We can talk through:

  • What you will feel
  • What you will see
  • How long it takes
  • What happens if you need a pause
  • How we keep you comfortable
  • What recovery is like
  • What to do if you feel worried after treatment

You can ask the same question more than once.

That is okay.

We want you to feel ready, not rushed.

How we help anxious patients feel calm

We explain each step

You will know what is happening before it happens.

No surprises.

We explain your options, your lens choice, the day of treatment, and your recovery.

We keep things calm

Our aim is to make the experience feel smooth and reassuring.

Many patients tell us they felt more relaxed once they met Dan and understood the plan.

We move at your pace

Some patients need more time.

That is fine.

Older patients and anxious patients may need things explained more than once. They may need a slower pace. They may want a family member involved.

We support that.

We focus on comfort

Before treatment, your eye is numbed with drops.

During treatment, the team checks on you.

After treatment, we explain your drops and recovery steps clearly.

Mild scratchiness, watering, or light sensitivity can happen after surgery. This is usually short-lived.

Strong pain is not normal, and you should contact the clinic if this happens.

We support you after treatment

Your care does not stop when surgery ends.

You will have aftercare guidance.

You will know what is normal.

You will know when to call us.

This matters because anxious patients often feel calmer when they know they are not being left on their own.

What patients often say afterwards

Many patients are surprised by how quick the procedure feels.

Some say they wish they had not waited so long.

Others describe the experience as caring, calm, and reassuring.

Some patients say they were nervous before treatment, but felt more confident once they understood the plan and felt supported by the team.

Of course, every patient is different.

But if fear is holding you back, it may help to know that many people have felt the same way before taking the next step.

The first step is just a conversation

You do not have to decide today.

You do not have to face your fear alone.

The first step is to speak to us.

We will listen. We will explain. We will help you understand what is right for your eyes.
