What is the difference between premium cataract surgery and standard cataract surgery?
The most significant single difference between the two types of cataract surgery is the type of lens that we place in the eye after we’ve removed your cataract.
However, the lens choice also affects how you see in daily life, how often you may be wearing glasses, and your long term independence from them.
Understanding these differences helps you make a confident and informed decision.
Standard cataract surgery explained
With standard cataract surgery, we replace the natural lens of the eye with a standard IOL (Intraocular lens). These are also called standard monofocal lenses.
A monofocal lens is designed to focus clearly at a single distance. Most people choose distance vision. This means you may see well for driving, watching television, and walking outdoors. However, you will usually still need glasses for reading, computer work, or close tasks. If you already wear glasses, this may feel familiar and comfortable.
Some patients are happy to continue using reading glasses after surgery.
Standard cataract surgery is safe, effective, and widely performed. It restores clarity by removing the cloudy cataract and replacing it with a clear lens. For many patients, it is an excellent option. It improves vision quality but does not aim to reduce your dependence on glasses beyond one distance.
Premium cataract surgery explained
With premium cataract surgery, we can insert premium lenses that aim to improve vision at more than one distance. These premium intraocular lenses can include multifocal lenses or extended depth lenses. They are designed to give vision for near, intermediate, and distance tasks. This can reduce your dependence on glasses for everyday activities.
Many patients find they can read menus, use their phone, and see clearly across the room without changing glasses.
Premium lenses are chosen based on your eyes, lifestyle, and visual goals. Not every lens suits every person. The goal is not perfection, but greater freedom. Over the long term, this can mean fewer glasses and fewer compromises in daily life.
Cataract surgery can also treat astigmatism
An added benefit of cataract removals is that it can also correct astigmatism1https://journals.lww.com/co-ophthalmology/Abstract/2009/01000/Correction_of_astigmatism_at_the_time_of_cataract.5.aspx.
Astigmatism occurs when the eye is not perfectly round. This can cause blurred or distorted vision at all distances. To correct this, we may use toric lenses.
These lenses are specially designed to correct astigmatism at the same time as cataract removal. Toric lenses can be used with both standard and premium options.
Correcting astigmatism often improves clarity and comfort. Many patients notice less eye strain and fewer headaches. It can also further reduce reliance on glasses.
How lens choice affects your life after surgery
The lens you choose affects how you see every day.
Standard monofocal lenses usually mean glasses for reading. Premium lenses aim to reduce the need for glasses across more situations.
If avoiding wearing glasses is important to you, premium options may be worth exploring. If simplicity and predictability matter more, standard lenses may be the right choice.
There is no single “best” lens. There is only the lens that best matches your eyes and your lifestyle.
Looking at the long-term picture
Cataract surgery is a once-in-a-lifetime procedure for most people. Your lens choice affects your vision for many years. Thinking about your long-term needs is important.
Ask yourself how you want to live. Consider reading, driving, hobbies, and screen use.
Premium cataract surgery is about planning ahead. It gives you the chance to shape your vision for the future, not just today.
Making a confident and informed choice
Choosing between standard and premium cataract surgery is a personal decision.
It depends on your eyes, your lifestyle, and your expectations. Some people are comfortable with glasses and value simplicity. Others want to reduce their reliance on glasses as much as possible.
