Who is suitable for Glaucoma treatment?

Glaucoma is a very complex condition; therefore, to determine your suitability for treatment, you must have a detailed assessment with a glaucoma specialist.

Glaucoma is treated by lowering the pressure inside the eye with medication, laser therapy, surgery, or a combination of glaucoma treatments.

Advantages

  • Glaucoma treatment helps to lower your eye pressure to prevent damage to the optic nerve.
  • Treatment has a high success rate
  • The most important benefit of glaucoma treatment is that it prevents the eyesight from worsening

Disadvantages

  • As with most treatments, there may be some risk of complications or side effects
  • Treatment cannot reverse the damage done to your vision
  • Even after treatment, you may experience continued changes in the nerve at the back of the eye related to glaucoma

Depending on the type of treatment that I recommend, there may be a risk of complication or side effects. I will discuss these with you in detail at your appointment.

Eye drops

Eye drops can be used to lower eye pressure. These medications work by reducing fluid production inside the eye or helping fluid drain from the eye. Glaucoma medications must be taken regularly each day to work effectively. Some patients may require more than one type of eye drop. If treatment with eye drops fails to control the pressure in your eye, or you experience side effects from them in the eye, laser treatment and/or an operation may be required.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment uses light to help fluid drain from the eye or eliminate fluid blockage. Medications are used to numb the eye before treatment so there is usually little or no pain. Most lasers take only a few minutes to perform. The type of laser that is right for you depends on your type of glaucoma. Common types of laser include:

  • Laser trabeculoplasty
  • Laser iridoplasty
  • Laser iridotomy
  • Diode laser

Surgery

In some patients with glaucoma, surgery is recommended. Glaucoma surgery improves the drainage of fluid from the eye, lowering eye pressure.

The type of surgery that is right for you depends on many factors including your age, general health, type and severity of glaucoma, eye pressure, and other eye conditions (e.g. cataract). We can discuss the best treatment for you at your appointment.

The glaucoma treatment steps are dependent on the specific procedure that I determine to be most suitable to your needs.

Glaucoma treatment will preserve your vision and prevent glaucoma from appearing or progressing.
